Student Scholarship Program
Overview
In May, 2007, the Council for International Affairs awarded a scholarship of $750 to Amy Alexander,a graduating member of the organization. The scholarship was awarded based on length of club involvement, regular attendance at World Affairs Council Houston's events and an essay. The selection committee reserves the right to determine whether the scholarship will be awarded.
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must meet the criteria of citizenship, residence, academic standing, college/university enrollment plans and character. The applicant must also demonstrate leadership and involvement in school activities, the community and the programs presented by the World Affairs Council Houston. Candidates must have an application (or acceptance) on file at a college or university for the fall or summer of 2010. The award will be disbursed directly to the collegiate institution once the recipient can provide proof of enrollment.
The recipient must have a demonstrated interest in international issues.
Application Instructions
Eligibility
The applicant must be a citizen of the United States and/or be born in the United States and a resident of the State of Texas. If the place of birth of the applicant as indicated on application and/or transcript is other than the United States, appropriate proof of citizenship must be furnished. Students with permanent resident status are not eligible to apply.
The applicant must be a graduating senior at The Woodlands High School.
The applicant must have a minimum overall unweighted grade point average of a B: or 80% and have no expulsions from school on his/her permanent record. This ranking is to be verified as part of the official transcript or by an accompanying certification from an appropriate school official.
A high school applicant must graduate at the end of the Spring semester immediately following the award of the scholarship.
The applicant must be enrolled or plan to enroll in either a college or university and participate in a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree. The applicant must have applied for admission at the time the scholarship application is submitted. The applicant must indicate the choice of a major and the career planned. The recipient must have a demonstrated interest in international issues.
Applications
Applications should be completed in full and must be typed or printed neatly in black or blue ink. Applications must be submitted in writing; we will not accept applications delivered via e-mail. Do not place applications in folders, binders or in protective sheet covers. Do not submit applications copied on two sides.
Applications submitted on or before May 4, 2010 at 2:30 pm. will be accepted.

Submit all items together in one mailing envelope. If an item is received by itself, it will be discarded and the incomplete application package will not be considered.
Requirements
Applicant should submit a cover letter answering the following four criteria. Each answer should be no more than six sentences.
1. Scholarship: List your GPA, class rank and any academic achievements/recognitions. Include a copy of your transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
2. School Service: List any outstanding contributions made to the school, including organizations and offices held.
3. Citizenship: Briefly discuss your discipline, conduct and attendance record at The Woodlands High School.
4. Experience: Name your favorite event at the Houston World Affairs Council and briefly describe why it was your favorite.
The applicant must also include a typed or handwritten narrative of no more than one, 8" x 11.5" sheets of paper - double-spaced in size 12 font. In this essay, the applicant will address the following topic:
You are the newly elected President of the United States. Using the knowledge you have gained from interaction with world leaders through your CIA membership, describe what you would do. Use specific insight gleaned from the speakers you have heard.
Application Evaluation
A selection committee will review all properly completed applications. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Notification
The Council for International Affairs will notify the recipient of the scholarship and will also notify the counselor's office . Notification will be made by May 7, 2010, and the scholarship recipient's name will also be posted on the CIA website and announced at the Senior Awards night.
